This workshop uses the LEGO® Serious Play® (LSP) method to design a semester or a sequence of teaching sessions. LSP is a facilitated, hands-on method that uses LEGO® bricks to support thinking, reflection, and communication. It is particularly well suited to semester planning, as it supports the “building” of key themes of a course and the representation of learning experiences. The aim is to support coherent course design by aligning learning content, in-class and out-of-class activities, feedback processes, and assessment tasks.
While the workshop is centered on semester planning, participants will also experience how an LSP session is structured and facilitated in practice. Through both individual and collaborative model-building, participants identify key elements of course design and their role in shaping student learning. The workshop is designed to be accessible for first-time users while also offering space for experienced practitioners to deepen and extend their practice.
By the end of the workshop, participants will have developed a concrete model for their semester or course design. Furthermore, we will also discuss how the approach might be integrated into participants’ own teaching, including the use of LSP directly with students.
Learning ObjectivesBy the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Reflect on the elements of their teaching and consider how they align.
- Construct LEGO® models to represent course design, teaching plans and timelines.
- Describe how the LEGO® Serious Play® (LSP) method can be used in different teaching situations.
Methods
LEGO® Serious Play® (LSP) is an established, evidence-based method where teams and individuals build models with LEGO bricks to represent abstract ideas. This hands-on approach focuses thinking, sparks creativity, and encourages open dialogue. LSP is a recognized facilitation methodology for both professional and educational settings.
