This workshop introduces participants to the pedagogic potential of object-based learning in higher education. Using “things”, such as material objects and images, as prompts for observation, questioning, discussion, and interpretation, the workshop explores how object-centred approaches can foster curiosity, deepen engagement, and support inquiry-driven learning across disciplines. Participants will consider how objects can be used to encourage close looking, critical thinking, collaborative discussion, and reflective learning, and will develop ideas for adapting these methods to their own teaching contexts. The workshop is particularly relevant for educators seeking active, student-centred approaches that make learning more interactive, inclusive, and memorable.
Learning ObjectivesBy the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Explain the pedagogic value and relevance of object-based learning in higher education settings
- Incorporate objects and images into their teaching to support inquiry-driven learning
- Design an object-based activity for their own teaching context.
Methods
The workshops in the DCAT teaching qualification program are designed to be active and learner centered. They employ a variety of social learning formats, exercises, group work, reflection, and feedback, enabling participants to deepen and actively apply what they have learned.
